Cinzia Romani (Rome, July 14, 1954) is an Italian journalist and writer. After completing her university studies in the dissolved GDR, in whose State film archives she viewed films shot during Nazism, she graduated in Foreign Languages and Literatures with Paolo Chiarini at the University La Sapienza in Rome. A literary scout for the publishing houses Adelphi, Einaudi, Sperling & Kupfer (for the latter she edited the editions of Stefan Zweig's works), she has written about culture, customs and cinema for La Stampa, la Repubblica, Sette, L'Indipendente, Uomini & Business. She has been writing for Il Giornale since 1994, where she covers culture, entertainment and interiors. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: This work, an Italian import, veers wildly between serious analysis of the Nazi-era German film industry and profiles of 18 of the period's female stars. Romani opens with a lengthy and intelligent essay on the Nazi takeover of filmmaking after 1933 and its transformation, under Joseph Goebbels's hands-on leadership, into an `Aryan' propaganda machine in which even light entertainment was considered `strategically important.' Noting that `the phenomenon of the star system in the Third Reich achieved almost Hollywoodian proportions,' Romani points out that only a small percentage of the films made under the Nazis were overt propaganda. Each of the actresses under discussion is represented by a short biography, complete credits and synopses for a couple of key films, including excerpts from contemporary reviews. The book is handsomely produced and illustrated; the subject matter and its treatment make it of interest to an American audience. Presumed First U.S. Paperback Edition, First printing.…
