In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the volume of freight hauled on the national rail network, resulting in the introduction of new high-capacity wagons, growth in colourful intermodal operation and a new lease of life for many older wagons which may otherwise have declined into rust and decay in the engineers' fleet.
