Very good condition overall.; "There comes a moment in the life of any collection when it attains a certain maturity. The Monimar Collection has reached this moment, and now it deserves to be enjoyed by a wider audience. It has taken some fifteen years to achieve this maturity. The Collection is one of the most satisfying and rounded groups of bottles assembled during the 'golden years', when art market and academic circumstances combined to give an emerging breed of serious collectors unprecedented opportunities and insights. It was a period of growth and the Monimar Collection is a perfect example of the best collecting during these golden years. It exemplifies three facets of collecting snuff bottles at the top end of the market during this period: the availability of fine bottles; the importance of new scholarship, and the way in which a collector sets his personal stamp onto his collection."A visit to China in the late 1970s prompted an interest in bottles a copy of the Stevens book laid down certain principles, and continuous study of subsequent research meant that the Monimar bottles were always enjoyed for what they represented in terms of Chinese art, not just as snuff bottles The 1970s and 1980s have seen a deluge of writing about bottles, from the arcane through the important to the highly controversial, with dating in particular often going far beyond the dates traditionally assigned to larger objects created from the same material. This Collection, and its book, is intended as a vehicle for this scholarship, appropriate to the 1990s. The bottles are notably simple and elegant in line, some of the finest are monochrome glass and inside painted, the simple forms providing a showcase for fine painting or surface carving. The taste is principally that of a Chinese collector, although Monimar is a European collection. An early interest in European painting and silver has evolved into a preference for smaller, simple objects and there are no excesses in design amongst the elegant overlay bottles, the splendid hard stones or the exceptional enamel bottles." excerpt from the foreword by Collin Sheaf, Director of the Chinese Department Christie's, London.
