About the book >.>.> His research in conjunction with Joan Southeran, who had worked with him at Low Grange, led to the publication of The Medieval Ori…gins of Billingham, based largely on document- ary sources, but supplemented by the results of fieldwork and excavation. He took a leading part in the Teesside Archaeological Society from its incep- tion and worked hard for its continued success and vitality, serving his second term as chairman up to the time of his death in 1988. Important also was his link with other archaeologists in the region; in the early period liaison with Barbara Harbottle and Brian Dobson promoted field work and resulted in a valuable two-way interchange of information. Thus Leslie Still came to occupy a key position in the middle-ground between a small number of pro- fessional archaeologists and a relatively large number of enthusiastic amateurs with a very dis- parate range of skills and experience. Apart from the direct contribution of his own research, his achievement was the use of his personal qual.
