Quarter Bound Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good (Slip Case). Limited/Numbered. This was a special production sold only to subscribers and limited to 250*copies, this being numbered 169 and signed by Baron Hailsham of Saint Marylebone, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain and G. H. Martin, Keeper of Public Records. The set was published at the invitation of the Public Record Office to celebrate the 900th anniversary of Domesday and consisted of a facsimile of the manuscripts including full translations along with extensive indices and maps. The Alecto Edition is considered the most complete facsimile of Domesday Book to date. The set consists of two facsimile volumes, a translation volume, a maps volume, and an indices volume. The books were bound by A W Lumsden of Edinburgh. The 413*folios of the original manuscript are reproduced in two facsimile volumes, quarter-bound in Alum-Tawed goatskin between antique oak boards sourced from floorboards of Tattingstone Hall and dating to around 1500 and housed within two cases which are quarter-bound in brown morocco and Irish linen. These facsimile volumes include the authentic silver penny dating from 1086 and a 1986 proof specimen bronze penny of Elizabeth II, both inset into the cover of the first volume. Volume I - Folios 0 to 202 along with an additional 12 folios of later annotations. Volume II - Folios 203 to 382 along with an additional 18 end folios added during subsequent rebindings of the originals. A further volume bound in brown morocco and Irish linen contains the title pages along with a dedication to Queen Elizabeth II and a general introduction to the Domesday Book by Professor H R Loyn. The translations are arranged in a double column format and based on those originally produced for the 1900 work 'Victoria Histories of the Counties of England' along with updates from more recent studies. The translation volume is quarter-bound in brown morocco and Irish linen, the upper page edges are in gilt. The maps volume includes 33 county maps on a 3 mile to 1 inch scale and includes both Latin and English place-names along with a map of England. The map volume is a case quarter-bound in brown morocco with Irish linen. The maps are held loose within the case as produced. The indices volume includes four sections covering England at the time of King Edward and King William, an index of places and an index of subjects. The indices volume is quarter-bound in brown morocco with Irish linen. The indices remain wrapped in the original tissue covering and do not appear to have been opened. All volumes have gilt lettering to the spines. Also includes is the 'Penny Edition' prospectus which includes a photographic explanation of the binding process, details of the sourcing of the oak boards a photograph of the presentation to Queen Elizabeth II and more. Finally a letter to the original owner of this particular set from the publishers is also included. The books are subject to light shelf-wear. In total this set weighs 45 kg, given the weight, size and cost of the set an insured delivery by courier is the only realistic option, before ordering please contact us to discuss options.

The Domesday Book - Millennium Edition is the complete text of the Domesday survey of William the Conqueror's kingdom in a limited edition of 450 [ No. 82 ], perfect facsimile copies. It is bound in a replica of the earliest known Domesday binding (the Winton Domesday) and very few copies remain. This is the de-luxe edition which includes companion volumes and maps which help bring to life this fascinating part of our heritage. A two-volume modern English translation, typeset so the text follows the original hand-written script line-for-line. These volumes are superbly hand-bound within a linen spine and hand-made paper sides. Also included is a people and places index volume, bound to match the translation. This volume includes an introduction and a dedication sheet carrying the number 82 / 450 . Domesday is presented with a matching solander box containing modern Ordnance Survey maps with overlaid Domesday sites (light water stain to 30% of the spine. The two-volume facsimile of Great Domesday, is bound in brown embossed EI calfskin to the 12th Century design of the Winton Domesday (which is one of only thirteen known English Romanesque bindings that have survived). The two volumes of the facsimile of the Domesday Book, are handsomely bound in antique style blind-stamped calf, housed in a custom reversed calf antique style satchel with ties. ** Domesday has been called one of the three most famous books in the world, alongside the Bible and the Koran, and is acknowledged as being one of the most important historical documents of the first millennium. William the Conqueror's great survey has been used as a working document ever since its commission at Christmas 1085, and remained pre-eminent as a census of England until the 19th Century. It was last consulted for legal precedent in 1982, 896 years after it was written. Domesday Book encompasses two independent works (in, originally, two physical volumes). These were "Little Domesday" (covering Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex), and "Great Domesday" (covering much of the remainder of England and parts of Wales, except for lands in the north which later became Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland, and the County Palatine of Durham). No surveys were made of the City of London, Winchester, or some other towns, probably due to their tax-exempt status.
