Wildlife tourism, ranching and sustainable utili- zation of natural resources are promoted as sources of foreign exchange for developing countries. In many industrialized countries, the revenue from birdwatching and related 'industries' can be counted in millions. Birds continue to provide vital data as the complex mechanisms of atmospheric pollution and the effects of pesticide residues are slowly unravelled.
