About the book >.>.> This volume contains the papers presented at a symposium on island manage-ment held in Cambridge on 12 August 1982 as part of the XVIII World Conference of the International Council for Bird Preservation. The stimulus for the symposium was the 1981-82 ICBP Conservation Programme, which included a project to develop guidelines for the management of islands important for bird conservation. I accepted an invitation from Dr Christoph Imboden to organize the symposium and edit the resulting proceedings. The symposium contributions deal with four topics in island conservation: processes affecting populations of island birds, regional surveys of the status of island birds, island conservation in action, and a programme for the protection of island ecosystems. Rather than attempt to obtain a comprehensive coverage of these subjects, I have sought contributions that will reveal what is actually being achieved in the field, or will provide information for future work and decision-making.
