Einband leicht berieben. - Publisher, art collector, and movie producer William Randolph Hearst envisioned his weekend ranch retreat as an estate unlike any other-an architectural masterpiece displaying his vast and varied art collections. He called his San Simeon residence La Cuesta Encantada-"The Enchanted Hill"-and opened its art-filled halls and guest houses to many of the famous, influential, and creative figures of the early twentieth century. To design and build his hilltop "castle" Hearst chose San Francisco architect Julia Morgan, trained in classical architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and equal to the tremendous tasks Hearst's project required. Planning for the San Simeon estate began in 1919, the eve of a 27-year collaboration between Julia Morgan and her most famous client. Hearst ordered-and Morgan designed- San Simeon's twin-towered 115-room Casa Grande, three guest houses, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gardens, tennis courts, even an exotic zoo. Hearst indulged his enthusiasm for art and art collecting, filling warehouses with a steady stream of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, rare antiquities, and architectural elements from a wide spectrum of periods and styles. Morgan incorporated many of these finds into San Simeon, often matching the themes of Hearst's treasures with detailed workmanship by her own carefully chosen artisans. From antique ceilings to Morgan's own designs for doorways, furnishings, and hand-glazed tile, exquisite details abound on "The Enchanted Hill." Hearst's San Simeon guest list in the 1920s andl930s reads like a virtual roll-call of influential twentieth century figures. Journalists, European royalty, Hollywood celebrities, politicians, aviators, and athletes all received irresistible invitations for weekend visits. Social life thrived amid constant construction, as guests swam, rode, or played tennis, dined in the imposing Refectory, dressed for lavish costume parties, or previewed Hollywood films in Hearst's private theatre. San Simeon-as Hearst and Morgan envisioned it- was never completed. Construction slowed in the late 1930s when Hearst experienced financial woes, and halted forever when he died in 1951 at the age of 88. Hearst's beloved ranch became Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument and opened to the public in 1958. Tour guides lead over a million visitors each year through the buildings and grounds for an unforgettable glimpse into the privileged world created by multimillionaire William Randolph Hearst and his inspired architect Julia Morgan.
