Lovecraft wrote "The Shadow over Innsmouth" in late 1931 and told some his correspondents that he would not submit it anywhere for publication. At the urging of August Derleth, in 1933 he submitted it to "Weird Magazine" but despite the fact that the editor found it fasciating, it was rejected. It was eventually published as a small book in an edition of only 400 copies in 1936 and an abridged version appeared in "Weird" in 1942.
