At no time prior to the eighteenth century did such a remarkable group of artists emerge in Japan; that the painters included in this exhibition were wither born in or pursued careers in Kyoto attests to that city's enduring cultural and economic force even a century after its political role was transferred to the new city of Edo. With sixty-one paintings on a variety of formats as a guide, this exhibition explores the distinctive personalities, biographical circumstances, and creative output of eight artists, and ultimately poses the question of why it was Kyoto in the eighteenth century that cultivate such an efflorescence of painting. The eight painters included in Traditions Unbound - Watanabe Shiko, Ike Taiga, Yosa Buson, Maruyama Okyo, Goshun, Nagasawa Rosetsu, Soga Shohaku, and Ito Jakuchu - were selected for the expressive strength and originality of their works, and for their pivotal roles as the progenitors of prevailing movements in late Edo-period painting.
