Einband leicht berieben. - Georgia O'Keeffe's early work is distinguished by a sombre palette of earth browns, greens, and blues, although her flower paintings are characteristically bright. In later years she most often painted the landscape and architecture of New Mexico, and her chromatic scheme ranged from brilliant pinks and blues to quiet, sensitive complements of grey and yellow. O'Keeffe said of her own work, "I paint what I see," and she kept her silence. Meanwhile, interpretation of her paintings by art historians and critics has remained awkward and elusive. Her paintings present us with imagery united in sensibility and intellect; a vision that evokes thoughtful as well as emotional response and reflects an ideal conception, undaunted by distracting elements. This vision may uphold a multitude of definitions and explanations yet, in the final analysis, may escape our ability to express in words.
