Inscribed by author on fep. DJ has some wear, soiling, edge tears and chips. Dorothy Butler Gilliam (born November 24, 1936) is an A…merican journalist who was the first African-American female reporter at The Washington Post. Gilliam started her career at The Washington Post in October 1961 as a reporter on the City Desk. In 1979, she began writing a popular column for the Post, covering education, politics, and race; the column ran regularly in the Metro section for 19 years. In addition to her career at The Washington Post, she has been an activist dedicated to public service including her tenure as president of the National Association of Black Journalists from 1993 to 1995. In 2004, she held the position of J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Fellow at The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs. The Washington Press Club awarded Gilliam its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. In 1915 Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers College, where he was twice named a consensus All-American and was the class valedictorian. Almost eighty years later, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Derived from a Kirkus review: Paul Robeson's life exemplified so much to so many. This charts the attachments of his early years, follows him to football and Phi Beta Kappa at Reuters, Columbia Law School and the snubs from law firms, marriage to Essie Goode, and the inevitable career impasse. A growing political consciousness from his stage career, his surprise reception in England, the influential trips to Spain and the Soviet Union--the significance of these experiences is supported by friends and contemporary writings. The serious difficulties that he faced and the strain of public acclaim and private discrimination can partially explain the increased interest in political activity. Harassed by HUAC and the FBI, angered by the Peekskill concert riots, he found halls closed to him, his passport denied, but he remained militant until his health declined: finally he secluded himself, never participating in the civil rights movement that reaped the benefit of his example.
