After receiving a Ph.D., he worked briefly as a rare book dealer and assistant curator at the Gutenberg Museum before moving to the United States. He was the author of several books on bookmaking, including The Life of the Book: How the Book is Written, Published, Printed, Sold and Read (1975). This book on woodcuts was written to address the relative lack of attention paid to this graphic art compared to engravings and etching. Emphasis on Dutch and German artists. Numerous plates in black and white. Quarto. Grey cloth covered boards, with title in gilt to front cover and spine. Slight sun fading to covers.
