He spent only six months studying archi tecture at the Royal College of Art before joining the practice of George and Pe to. At the age of twenty he started his own practice. Lutyens' career lasted fif ty years in a time when Britain was at the height of its prosperity. He died in 1944. These three memorial volumes, compiled from the thousands of drawings foun d in Lutyens' office, embody the quintessence of the man and his work. He designed many En glish country houses, war memorials and public buildings, and stands alongside C hristopher Wren as one of England's greatest architects. Lutyens' prolific outpu t was first edited and published a decade after his death by which time his desi gns appeared old fashioned to the public. Jackets sunned and a little rubbed at extremities, with one short closed tear and slight crushing. Clean and fresh internally. Original publication of the Memorial Volumes in 1950. Butler and Hussey knew Lutyens well, with Stewart having worked in his office for thirty years. Stewart was principally responsible for selecting from Lutyens extant drawings, which here combine with explanatory text and photographic illustrations of the finished buildings to form a monumental work. Pevsner observed "No English architect other than Wren has ever been recorded like this."
