Die Metro Pictures trugen zu dem Zusammenschluss vor allem Stars und Regisseure bei, die Goldwyn Pictures das Löwen-Logo sowie ihre bedeutenden Studioanlagen und die Mayer Pictures ihren geschäftstüchtigen Topmanager, Louis B. Mayer. Die MGM, die sich in Culver City niederließ, war ein Tochterunternehmen der seit 1904 bestehenden Kinokette Loew's, Inc. Offizielles Gründungsdatum der MGM war der 17. Mai 1924; Louis B. Mayer weihte sein Studio allerdings schon am 26. April 1924 ein. Mayer selbst kam mit Nicholas Schenck, dem Chef der New Yorker Muttergesellschaft Loew's, Inc. nicht aus und der Streit eskalierte 1928, als Schenck versuchte, an Mayer vorbei die MGM an William Fox zu verkaufen. Die Gründung der MGM im Jahre 1924 war eines der Ereignisse, die den Beginn des klassischen Studiosystems markieren. Der bisherige Marktführer Paramount erfuhr durch MGM erstmals dauerhafte Konkurrenz, nachdem die Versuche von First National am fehlenden Kontingent von Stars gescheitert waren. Neben der bereits lange existierenden Gesellschaft Universal kamen durch zahlreiche Fusionen Warner Bros., ab 1928 verstärkt um First National, und die Fox hinzu (die allerdings 1933 bankrott ging und Ende 1934 mit 20th Century Pictures zur 20th Century Fox fusionierte). RKO verschmolz erst zu Beginn der Tonfilm-Ära zur abschließenden Struktur und United Artists spielte stets eine Sonderrolle, da diese Firma sich als Vertriebsstätte für unabhängige Produ.
