This edition draws primarily from Barbot's French account, which he began in 1683 based on his voyage journals and prior printed sources. His work was disrupted by his flight to England as a Huguenot refugee in 1685, with its completion only occurring in 1688. Faced with publication challenges in French, Barbot subsequently translated and expanded his manuscript into English, continuing to revise it until his death in 1712. The completed manuscript eventually saw publication in 1732, and Barbot?s observations have since been influential in shaping European perspectives on Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade.This edition focuses on Barbot's original contributions and annotations, particularly regarding the regions of Senegal, Sierra Leone, River Sess, the Gold Coast, and the Calabars. While Barbot drew from earlier sources, these derivatives have been omitted from the text and acknowledged in the accompanying notes.
