Zustand: Very Good. 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Frank Graham, 1971, 1st edn. with laminated pictorial dust cover, spine evenly faded else in mint condition; red leatherette in mint condition; 189+7pp appendix, index. The strikes of the engineering workers in North-East England in 1871 are among the most interesting industrial disputes of the nineteenth century. This book considers the background to the disputes, with studies of earlier agitations for the reduction of the hours of work and of earlier industrial disturbances in North-East England. There follows a detailed analysis of the 1871 disputes, which achieved the nine hours day, after a strike of about a month's duration on Wearside and after a much longer strike lasting from May until October on Tyneside. Engineering was a rapidly developing industry in the area, in which few of the workmen were organised in trade unions, and one of the most notable elements of the strike was the extraordinary skill with which the workmen's side of the dispute was conducted. Their temporary organisation, led by Andrew Gourley and John Burnett, directed the strike with great efficiency and eventually defeated an entrenched employers' association which at the commencement of the strike had seemed certain to triumph over the men. On the other hand the employers, led by Sir William Armstrong, made serious mistakes and adopted such ill-advised tactics, which, with their policy of intransigence, drove uncommitted public opinion to the support of the men, a factor of considerable importance in the eventual outcome. As a result of the success of the strikes there followed throughout the country a wave of similar demands for shortened working hours, which achieved considerable success. 8¾x5¾". . . . .
