This period of a hundred years, arbitrarily delimited, is much too long to present a uniform aspect; we must presuppose changes and development. In the eighteenth century, more perhaps than in any other, life was lived with eager intensity and passion; but there was also a certain uneasiness derived from deep contradictions. Without rejecting traditions of balance and harmony of recognized value, the century felt new needs for liberty and expression. Curbed for so long, their emergence would be marked by mounting imperiousness and audacity. Such a break is not accomplished without sharp conflict. The French Revolution comes to one's mind. However, at the beginning of the century the old king Louis XIV had passed away after a long reign which had closed in a mood of austerity. From the time of the Regency there developed in reaction a spirit dedicated to the unrestrained pursuit of the pleasur.
