This work retells the story of Hanukkah and explains it…s symbols by describing high points in Jewish history, worship, and culture. Miriam Chaikin (1924 to April 15, 2015) was a writer of children's books and poetry and published at least 35 books during her lifetime. She often wrote about Jewish life. She was awarded the Sydney Taylor Book Award and the National Jewish Book Award. Chaikin, known as "Molly" to her family, was born in Jerusalem in 1924. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1925, and she grew up in Brooklyn. Her family lived in "very humble" circumstances. Chaikin worked for the Israeli paramilitary organization Irgun in their American branch, then as a secretary to Members of Congress, and then as a book editor. She lived part of the time in Israel. In New York City, she lived at Westbeth Artists Community in the West Village. As a writer of at least 35 children's books, she focused on Jewish life. She also published poetry and a book about Jerusalem. Margaret Yatsevitch Phinney has described Chaikin's aim as "to acknowledge children's common, but troublesome feelings of isolation and loneliness, and to let them know others have had the same feelings". Phinney also notes that Chaikin's intent, "particularly in her later books, is to illuminate and record the history, traditions, and values of the Jewish people". Demi first came to love Indian art and culture when she lived in India for two years as a young adult, and she has returned many times since. She is the author and illustrator of numerous books for children, including Light Another Candle by Miriam Chaikin. The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen was selected by The New York Times as one of the ten best illustrated books of 1985; The Empty Pot, named an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists, a Notable Children's Trade book in the Field of Social Studies, and an IRA-CBC Children's Choice; The Magic Boat, named an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists; and most recently, Buddha. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah. One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shammash. Each night, one additional candle is lit by the shammash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival. Other Hanukkah festivities include singing Hanukkah songs, playing the game of dreidel and eating oil-based foods, such as latkes and sufganiyot, and dairy foods. Originally instituted as a feast "in the manner of Sukkot (Booths)", it does not come with the corresponding obligations, and is therefore a relatively minor holiday in strictly religious terms.
