''I will give in to the publisher's request, '' she thought. ''Otherwise, who will remember why these stones are here? '' They are all that is left of the concentration camp that was erected on the family farm in 1944. Her mother, Irmgard von Neurath, and Wendi, then 18, did their best to help the prisoners. When World War II was over, a French military judge told Mrs. von Neurath, according to her daughter: ''You are one German who helped to save civilization. You have acted honorably and with charity. '' During an interview at her publishers, Mrs. von Staden's voice broke and her eyes misted as she spoke of her mother and the horror she finally bore witness to in print.
