Established only seven years prior, the collection began with an important acquisition: a Rembrandt chalk study of a nude titled Cleopatra. This acquisition, proposed by George R. Goldner in 1981, marked a pivotal moment, allowing the Museum to expand beyond its traditional focus on antiquities, French furniture, decorative arts, and European paintings.As the collection grew systematically under Dr. Goldner?s guidance, approximately forty drawings were acquired before 1983, leading to the establishment of a new department dedicated to drawings. Over time, with the addition of staff members like Nancy Yocco and Lee Hendrix, the department has made significant strides in areas such as collecting, exhibiting, publishing, and scholarship. The current collection boasts more than two hundred drawings, primarily focusing on rare pieces from the Italian and German Renaissance, as well as select works from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.The catalogue aims to capture the dynamic evolution of this collection, showcasing a range of artists, including those not widely recognised.
