He then appeared on Broadway and in supporting roles in movie musicals. His Saturday night variety CBS TV program that ran from 1962 to 1970. In addition to his Brooklyn bus driver Ralph Kramden, husband of the inimitable Alice (first played by Pert Kelton and then most famously by Audrey Meadows and finally Sheila McRae) he created characters such a Reginald Van Gleason III, Joe The Bartender, The Poor Soul and others). His later movie roles notably included Minnesota Fats in "The Hustler" and the portly sheriff in Smokey and The Bandit.
