In the new war, however, mobility and speed were the keys to victory. Newer and better vehicles were needed to keep up with the enemy. Cavalry, because of its mobility, was the natural choice for the armored corps of the US forces. During the 1930s, horse-drawn equipment was slowly phased out in favor of the rapidly improving automotive and truck units. The first vehicles were civilian wheeled trucks converted to all-wheel drive. Then came armor, followed by the development of the half-tracked truck. Light tanks came next with the early MI and M2 combat cars, which later evolved into the popular M3 radial engine tank and M5 twin V-8 engine tank. The next step was medium tanks, and these developed into the M3 Lee. (LL).
