Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Presumed first edition/first printing. 416 pages. CD inside front cover in pocket. Illustrations. Index. Slight DJ wear. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Inscription reads: To Leonard Bruno, With admiration and best wishes, Russ Peterson, 7/12/99. Foreword by Peter Matthiessen. Index. Russell Wilbur "Russ" Peterson (October 3, 1916 - February 21, 2011) was an American scientist and politician from Wilmington, Delaware. He served as Governor of Delaware as a member of the Republican Party. Nixon, impressed by Peterson, appointed Peterson as Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality. Peterson served from 1973 to 1976, leading a taskforce on the elimination of chlorofluorocarbons and helping to shape environmental reviews as mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act. In November 1973, Peterson worked with then-Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller to establish the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans. The author provides a good historical perspective on social justice and environmental integrity, and presents solid solutions for coping with critical global issues. He favors a growing collaboration involving governments, environmentalists, business leaders, and religious groups--facilitated by the United Nations--to resolve the environmental crisis. Derived from Publisher's Weekly: This is a thoroughly inspiring memoir. In 1968, Peterson, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, retired from a flourishing, 26-year career at DuPont to pursue a life of public service. The organizational and management skills he had refined in the business world formed the backbone of his successful campaign to become governor of Delaware. Peterson led the restructuring of the antiquated executive branch, drastically improved funding for education and pushed forward the controversial Coastal Zone Act, which prevented the state's beautiful wetlands from being turned into the site of a major oil-industrial complex. Peterson went on to influential positions as the chairman of the Presidential Council on Environmental Quality, the head of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the president of the National Audubon Society, among others. Peterson's writing is characterized by his contagious enthusiasm and optimistic faith in the possibilities of civic activism.
