Or is it, perhaps, sometimes to be thought of as a god or demon and sometimes merely as an experience? When reading Anna Karenina or Lady Chat- terleys Lover, we can eliminate all but the last alternative and assume that love is a human experience. In medieval and Renaissance literature, however, we meet love as a god or demon at every turn and must entertain all three alternatives. But how seriously must we entertain them? This question about poetic theology is the central issue of Thomas Hydes wide- ranging study in the uses of the God of Loves most crucial attribute - his metaphorical or Active divinity. In The Poetic Theology of Love: Cupid in Renaissance Literature Hyde discerns a coherent tradition of poetic theology amid the confusion of ornamental or frivolous parts that Cupid or Amor or the God of Love often plays in the literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Fresh readings of major texts illustrate this tradition, which includes Renaissance poets, mythographers, and trat- tatisti damore, as well as the Roman de la rose, the Vita Nuova, and Petrarchs Trionfi. The tradition culminates in Spensers minor poems as well as the Faerie Queene. These works employ the God of Love sometimes dialectically and always ambivalently - successively or simultaneously both as a mythical deity and as a figure of speech, a god and a personified experience. This ambivalence is crucial, Hyde suggests, because it implicates, and perhaps jeopardizes, the status of literary fiction and therefore authors and readers, as well as characters within fictions. In these works the mythology of love puts into play both idolatry and iconoclasm, mythopoeia and reductionism, confidence in fiction as a necessary veil for truth, and mistrust of it as deceit or delusion. In this complex and illuminating argument, the poetic theology of love figures not only the difficulties of erotic experience, but also those of literary art that appropriates for itself the power and the guilt of antique myth. / Contents Acknowledgments A Note on Sources 1 The Poetic Theology of Love 2 Medieval Developments 3 The Vita Nuova and the Trionfi 4 Renaissance Poetry 5 Renaissance Mythographers and Neoplatonists 6 Spensers Minor Poems 7 The Faerie Queene Epilogue Notes Bibliography Index.
