Einband leicht berieben. - Frederick Carder, the founder of Steuben Glass, first became fascinated with glass at age sixteen when he visited John Northwood's studio in 1897 and saw his copy of the famous Portland Vase, considered the world's greatest masterpiece of Roman cameo glass. In later years, Carder loved to recall that when he first saw that vase he was "struck with the possibilities of glass" and "determined, if possible, to get into the business." He "got into the business" the very next year when Stevens & Williams, one of England's foremost glass manufacturers, hired him as a designer at their factory in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.
