Carl Alpert, 7 Nov. 1982. Carl Alpert (May 12, 1913 - May 12, 2005) was a Boston-born journalist, author, communal worker and public relations specialist, first in America and then in Israel (where he settled in 1952). His first newspaper article appeared on April 25, 1930, and his last was dated March 14, 2005. His syndicated articles appeared in Denver's Intermountain Jewish News over the course of 67 years. He calculated that he had written some 3,300 columns. Volume 1 is more than a history of Israel's oldest and world-renowned institution, The Technion Story by Carl Alpert is a detailed, human account of the evolution of a university which has been intrinsic to the technological development of Israel for more than half a century. Technion is a source of engineering, scientific and medical manpower. Volume 2, describes later developments with Technion, Israel's oldest institution of higher learning. In an earlier volume the authors told the story of Technion's origin and development. In this volume the story is brought up to date (2001). The Technion - Israel Institute of Technology is a public research university in Haifa, Israel. Established in 1912 during the Ottoman Empire and more than 35 years before the State of Israel, the Technion is the oldest university in the country. The Technion is ranked best university in Israel and the Middle East. The university offers degrees in science and engineering, and related fields such as architecture, medicine, industrial management, and education. It has 19 academic departments, 60 research centers, and 12 affiliated teaching hospitals. Since its founding, it has awarded more than 100,000 degrees and its graduates are cited for providing the skills and education behind the creation and protection of the State of Israel. Technion's 565 faculty members currently include three Nobel Laureates in chemistry. Four Nobel Laureates have been associated with the university. The Technion has played a major role in the history of modern Israel. The selection of Hebrew as the language of instruction, defeating German in the War of the Languages, was an important milestone in Hebrew's consolidation as Israel's official language. The Technion is also a major factor behind the growth of Israel's high-tech industry and innovation, including the country's technical cluster in Silicon Wadi.
