Hardback. Zustand: Very Good - See Description. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Reprint. 1978. Second printing. 239pp, 18 colour and 253 black and white illustrations. Shōji Hamada (1894-1978) was a Japanese potter. He had a significant influence on studio pottery of the 20th century, and was a major figure of the mingei… (folk-art) movement, establishing the town of Mashiko as a pottery centre. In 1955 he was designated one of Japan's "Living National Treasures". This book is the first to offer a view of his daily life and work. The author spent four months with Hamada in 1970, and by participating in the life of the artist and his family, and by absorbing the environment of the pottery, she was able to experience the full force of Hamada's ideas and way. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with orange and black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition and the contents are tight and clean. This copy has been in a library but was probably reserve stock as the only library indications appear to be traces of a small erased stamp on the top edge of the title-page and a larger square stamp, overlaid with a 'withdrawn' stamp, on the back of the title-page. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and light bumping to the spine ends.
