Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket in carton box); 26.5 x 37.1 cm, 2.8 kg, 274 pages with color plates.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The carton box shows signs of wear throughout, namely some tears on one side-. The dust jacket shows wear marks, edge wear, scuffs ans scratches; and shows two small tear/scuffs on the rear of the front and back cover, only seem when the book is open. Interior in very good condition.; Written and compiled by a leading Japanese ukiyo-e scholar and adapted by an American collector and connoisseur, this book contains a Japanese woodblock print selection, which, says author Narazaki, "drawn as it was from twenty-four different sources in Japan and America, and comprising as it does many extremely rare prints and some known to be unique, would never be a possibility except on the hypothetical basis that we have accomplished here". These prints are the products of men who lived during the 17th to 19th centuries, men who probably never imagined that their works, which often enjoyed an intense but grief popularity in their own time, would gain world renown in the later century. They are, for us, not only works of art in the finest sense, but also remain as visual records and impressions of the vigor and life of bygone Japan. This volume presents an "exhibiton" of more than a hundred ukyo-e prints in full color, reproducing the originals with the fidelity of modern printing techniques, and covering a wide range of subject matter: portraits of actors, theatrical scenes, beautiful women, genre scenes, landscapes, comic prints, and others. Every major ukyo-e artist is represented, as well as most of the important secondary artists. In addition to the introductory text in three chapters, the plates are accompanied by extensive captions containing descriptions of artistic detail, biographical material about the artists, and the evolutionary history of the Japanese print. The adaptor, Mr. C.H. Mitchell, has also contributed a special section covering the market value, selection, criteria for the collection, and care of prints. His annotated bibliography is the most complete ever compiled on the subject in English. This is the first comprehensive presentation of the Japanese print in English by a Japanese authority. The masterpieces contained here, says Dr. Narazaki, "would constitute an ideal small collection - the perfect quintessence of the Japanese print".
