Foreword: The Pro Caelio is unique among the speeches of Cicero for its pervasive and artistically wrought use of dramatic ethos. Professor Geffckens Comedy in teh Pro Caelio, first published in 1973, demonstrates masterfully how each major character in the speech assumes the persona of a stock figure in Roman comedy; when these characters take their places under Ciceros skillful direction, they produce a comedy worthy of the Roman stage. Geffckens monograph has had a profound impact on subsequent scholarship on the Pro Caelio and is required freading for everyone who is interested in the speech. The reprint of this volume is particularly timely now that the Pro Caelio has been added to the Advanced Placement Syllabus. it will prove a valuable resouce to both students nad teachers.
