In this book Father Francis Edwards describes the challenging presence in England of perhaps the most controversial Orders of the Catholic Church. The story of the English Province of the Society of Jesus begins in 1580 at a time of persectuion for the Church, This book carries the account through the Suppression of the Society in 1773, to the second world war, and right up to the present day and the period of ecumenism. The central subject of this book is historical and political, not doctrinal. At the same time the author has not attempted to ignore or gloss over ecclesiastical differences and misunderstandings in the past; but he adds, 'it is to be hoped that it is now possible to write of past dissensions withour resurrecting dead antagonisms'. A particularly valuable chapter has been written on the period 1946-1964 by Father John Conventry who was Provincial for the last six years of that time. In addition Father Edwards supplies a special chapter on the introduction of the Jesuits to Scotland, also in 1580, and their return there in the 1850s. With its useful appendices and notes, and its eloquent, sympathetic but objective text this book offers a vaulable and scholarly account of a little studied aspect of English religious history.
