Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - leicht berieben, sonst guter Zustand / slightly rubbed, otherwise good condition. - SOPHOCLES: Selected Fragmentary Plays, Volume I The fragmentary plays of Sophocles often give us glimpses of a dramatist much more versatile and much less predictable than might be supposed on the basis of the seven plays that survive complete. This volume, the first of two, presents six of Sophocles' 100 or so fragmentary tragedies - Hermione, Polyxene, Syndeipnoi (The Diners), Tereus, Troilus and Phaedra. Each play is introduced by a summary bibliography and an essay which analyses the mythic background and plot, including artistic evidence for the story and other dramatic and literary treatments of it; reconstructs the play to as great, or as little, an extent as the fragments of the text and the secondary evidence allow; and discusses themes, characterization, and such evidence as there may be for staging and date. The fragments of the text and selected key secondary evidence are then presented, accompanied by an English translation and followed by a short, primarily interpretative commentary. / CONTENTS Preface General Introduction (AHS) References and Abbreviations Hermione or The Women of Phthia (AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary Polyxene (AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary Syndeipnoi (The Diners) or Achaion Syllogos (The Gathering of the Achaeans) (AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary Tereus (DGF/AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary Troilus (AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary Phaedra (THT/AHS) Introduction Text and Translation Commentary.
