'My work', he said, 'has always been to explore, not to reach perfection. This place is a real challenge.' It was a repeat of the situation in 1972 in Florence when Henry Moore's classic modernity was set alongside the humanist landscapes of Giotto and Brunelleschi. Times have changed, and so has art. In 1992 the Trajan Markets, the daily market of ancient Rome, offered the setting for the severe, abstract, bare and un-compromising sculptures of Anthony Caro. 'Sculpture', he told us that day, 'has been very dull since Michelangelo and Bernini. We must give it new life and nourishment, we must give it a chance to signify some-thing new in our lives.'
