Richard Long's elegantly illustrated book, dedicated to Pearl Primus and Katherine Dunham, shows how the varied contributions of many talented and persevering men and women have put Black dance and dancers in the spotlight. With asides from contemporary critics and chroniclers of Black American culture, the book traces all the strands, motifs and fashions in Afro American dance from the early minstrels, through the dance-dramas of Isadata Dafora, to the thriving dance companies of today Alvin Ailey, Harlem, Nanette Bearden, Dayton, Philadelphia which attract artists and audiences from all over the world. . (Verlagstext) // . Contemporary American concert-theatrical dance exists in a culturally diverse milieu, so that the term "Black dance" in this domain reflects a social as much as a cultural distinction. In this book we will trace the Black tradition as it has given rise to current Afro-American dance trends and achievements, looking at Black presence and influence in various categories of dance. These include the direct inclusion of Black choreographic movement in a theatrical work, as in the Haitian-derived works of Katherine Dunham, or of popular dance-hall forms in works of Talley Beatty; the absorption of Black choreographic talent in a choreographed role, particularly in musical theater, such as that of Katherine Dunham in Cabin in the Sky on Broadway; the mimetic reflection of Black choreographic movement in work by a variety of choreographers, particularly those of Broadway shows; the absorption of Black stance and gesture into a choreographic matrix, as in the work of Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharpe; and the choreographic interpretation of Black music and musical elements, such as spirituals, blues, jazz, samba, or their distinctive features, as in the work of Helen Tamiris and many others.
