John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 - June 4, 2010) was an American basketball player and head coach at the University of California at Los Angeles. Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood," he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period as head coach at UCLA, including a record seven in a row. No other team has won more than four in a row in Division 1 college men's or women's basketball. Within this period, his teams won an NCAA men's basketball record 88 consecutive games. Wooden won the prestigious Henry Iba Award as national coach of the year a record seven times and won the AP award five times. He also won a Helms national championship (which was decided by a poll) at Purdue as a player 1931-1932 for a total of 11 national titles. One of the most revered coaches in sports, Wooden was beloved by his former players. Jay J. Carty Jr. (July 4, 1941 - May 4, 2017) was a basketball player, public speaker, church consultant, and ministry leader. He played collegiate basketball for Oregon State University, and was selected by the St. Louis Hawks in the 6th round (48th pick overall) of the 1962 NBA draft. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers (1968-69) in the National Basketball Association for 28 games. Later, Carty worked in business in Oregon and Southern California. Jay went on to a career in public speaking, founding "Yes! Ministries," speaking to thousands of youth and families across America. Jay authored many books, including books written with UCLA coach, John Wooden.[This book of 60 daily readings is the result of one-on-one conversations between basketball's legendary coach and teacher, John Wooden, and Jay Carty, former Laker and one time Wooden assistant. Each of the two page readings contains life wisdom from the Coach, application and reflection from Jay and a daily Scripture reading and prayer].
