About the book >.>.> But anthropological evidence does not penetrate that far into the past. We know only that the Hopis, like their Eastern Pueblo cousins, somehow emerged out of an an- cestral culture whose home was the San Juan Valley. Nearly two thousand years ago seminomadic seed-gathering peoples inhabited the valley and wide territories on each side of it. They clustered along the watercourses, hunting, harvesting wild food, and cultivat- ing a primitive maize. They wandered back and forth across this extensive terrain, sometimes beyond it, and from time to time other small groups came in from other places. It is generally assumed that what motivated these population movements was the endless search for surroundings that would pro- vide for elemental human physical needs. But if surviving myths and legends are listened to with care they may tell us that these restless ancestors were also searching for places of spiritual harmony with nature. (LL).
