This is a New York Graphic Society Book. Foreword by John Felt, Vice President, USWest Inc. which us his images in advertising . Gathers photographs of horses, cowboys, ranch life, and the Western landscape and shares the author's impression of what it's like to be a cowboy. A photographic view of the Cowboys on the Great Basin of Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and California. Profusely illustrated with photographs, ninety three in full color, and twenty four in duotone. Kurt Markus (April 6, 1947 - June 12, 2022) was an American photographer. Born in rural Montana and self-taught, Markus was a nationally and internationally published photographer of "unique vision." He won major awards for his editorial, advertising, and personal work. His photographs demonstrate "extraordinary vision and focus" and are critically renowned. Markus's personal work began with a focus on American West Cowboys, which is perhaps his most acclaimed subject to this day. "His timeless photographs explore the rugged yet romantic spirit of the cowboy.Markus reveals an era that is all but forgotten today. In his photography, Markus documents a life style of solitude and difficulty, yet to the viewers, a sense of romance; a hard life of plain food, plain surroundings, horses, and exposure to the elements, and yet a simple life free of inherent stress. Derived from a reader's review found on-line: In this wonderful oversize book are 117 stunning photographs of Great Basin buckaroos and ranches, in color (93) and black and white (24). The images are sharply focused. Many photographs capture the terrain, whether dead flat under a vast open sky or mountainous. A lone figure on a horse may appear as a small detail in the picture, or men working cattle in various seasons may be the subject. Markus also turns his camera to individuals for portrait shots. And he captures close-up details of cowboy gear, tack, and clothing. Markus has an eye for the everyday and the wonder to be felt in ordinary passing moments. The golden light of a low sun reflects from the watery slurry in a corral onto the boards of a fence; a ranch interior shows a kitchen table with worn chairs and oil cloth in the foreground and in the next room a workshop with tools neatly arranged on the walls; a couple dances in a cowboy bar; two young cowboys have roped and tied a third one, who is getting head-dunked into a stream; in the retreating light from a clear evening sky, a cowboy steps from a tent and in the foreground, under a windmill, is a portable radio with its antenna extended. Interesting for those more familiar with cowboys from east of the Rockies, the book shows the many details of outfitting that mark the buckaroo as distinctly different - suspenders, flat brimmed hats, large scarves, chinks, vests. There are also beards and some fancy mustaches. The book opens with several pages of enjoyable excerpts from the photographer's journals. There's additional informative commentary for many of the photographs at the back of the book. Excellent addition to any western bookshelf. First edition. [Stated]. Presumed first printing.
