Augustine served as chairman of the Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee. Beginning in 1965, he served as Assistant Director of Defense Research and Engineering. He joined LTV Missiles and Space Company in 1970, serving as vice president of advanced programs. In 1973 he returned to the government as Assistant Secretary of the Army and in 1975 became Acting Secretary of the Army. Joining Martin Marietta Corporation in 1977, he was elected as CEO in 1987 and chairman in 1988. He served as president of the Lockheed Martin Corporation upon the formation of that company in 1995, and became CEO later that year. He retired as chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin in August 1997. In this text, the author shares his professional and personal adventures, and offers insights and observations on several business and social issues, including values, management, competition, and ethics. Norman Augustine, the chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation, recounts his travels around the world and shares his perspectives on business issues such as leadership, competitiveness, mergers and acquisitions, and reengineering. Writing in a clear style, with numerous anecdotes, Augustine brings his experience as CEO and chair of Lockheed Martin Corporation to bear on diverse issues in both business (ethics, competitiveness, and reengineering) and society (volunteerism, technological change, and education). His comments on American education from the viewpoint of a business leader are particularly insightful. In addition, Augustine's use of his own company to illustrate his points serves to tell the story of how the end of the Cold War changed the entire defense industry.
