Hardcover. Small 4to. Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xi, 360pp. Illustrations. Near fine/near fine. Wonderfully tight and bright first edition of this in-depth study, nicely inscribed and signed by him in black ballpoint on front flyleaf: "Sept. 1971 / For Frank and Madeleine -- / With affection / From / Sam and Marion." Historian Horace Samuel Merrill (1910-96) taught at University of Maryland for a great many years and his wife Marion Galbraith Merrill (1914-2012) acted as his research assistant. This is the only title they authored jointly and copies signed by either are seldom encountered.
