The massacre of innocent Korean civilians, possibly over 250 in all, by US troops at No Gun Ri in the early days of the Korean War has been a thorn in the side of US-Korean relations, particularly since the 1999 expose published by the Associated Pr…ess. The Pulitzer Award-winning AP report documented extensive first hand witness accounts and also uncovered contemporary US military orders to shoot South Korean civilians in their path. Subsequent investigations by both governments resulted in sharply conflicting conclusions, the US investigators reporting extenuating circumstances, such as hostile fire from the Korean side. The present account by an American military officer and scholar takes a rigourous look at the circumstances leading up to the massacre and the killings themselves and concludes that the AP report was flawed.
