Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: DJ Near Fine. Later Printing (7th). Beginning with the icons of the war, Lowry notes that the reputation of such saint like figures as Lincoln, Lee, and Stonewall Jackson is well deserved. However, the rank and file present quite another story, and Lowry tells it in an easy, armchair-style prose that is well documented with letters (Library Journal). 240pp. Size: Large Octavo.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Mark Olezewski (Jacket Design) (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. xiv, 209, [10] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Signed and dated by author on title page. Foreword by Robert K. Krick. Sticker with excerpt from the New York Times Book Review on front of DJ. Thomas Power Lowry (born 1932) is an American author and retired physician. A psychiatrist by training, he turned in the 1990s to writing historical non-fiction about the American Civil War. After retiring from a four-decade career in medicine, Lowry shifted in the 1990s to writing non-fiction historical works. He has authored or co-authored more than 20 books, the majority dealing with the American Civil War period. Much of the Lowrys' research was carried out at the U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C., where, over the course of a decade, the Lowrys compiled a large index of thousands of previously uncatalogued Civil War documents. Lowry's first and best-known book on this subject, The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell (1994), received a favorable review in the New York Times as "the first study of sexual behavior associated with the Civil War," and was praised in Esquire as "amusing and fascinating." His 2004 book on the Lewis and Clark Expedition earned him an award from the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. The author served in the U.S. Air Force and was also on the staff of the Masters & Johnson Clinic early in his career. Based on rare original sources, including the soldiers' jokes, songs, letters, and diaries, this book covers all aspects of sexuality during the Civil War. "Lowry, a physician and medical historian, weaves a fascinating history of a little-discussed aspect of a much-discussed subject." --"Library Journal "Drawing on a wide variety of primary sources--from letters that escaped the censoriousness of their writers' descendants to court-martial reports, prostitutes' diaries, and the modest remaining examples of very immodest Victorian erotica--Lowry argues that, in spite of Victorian mores, a thoroughly normal amount of sexual activity went on under the covers and in other places during the war." --"Booklist "Explores the secret life of the men in blue and gray--from pornography, bawdy songs, and prostitution to stories of love and marriage.
