Zustand: Sehr gut. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - During the last half of the nineteenth century, America's favorite pictorial storytellers were Currier and Ives, print-makers extraordinary. Hundreds of thousands of Currier and Ives's hand-colored engravings made their way onto the walls of homes across the country. From pastoral America to bustling scenes of city life, horse racing, fire fighting-you name it-Nathaniel Currier and James Merrit Ives pictured it. Published here are more than seventy-five of the 204 prints that Currier and Ives created especially to appeal to Irish-Americans. At the time these pictures were published many who bought them were newly arrived in the United States, victims of the terrible famines and farm evictions in Ireland in the 1840s and 1850s. As this new population grew and its affluence increased, these colorful Currier and Ives prints served well as reminders of home, the Ireland left behind. The prints show the Irish landscape, key moments in Irish history, portraits of men and women of importance, and episodes of daily life. By the 1860s Currier and Ives were able to add portraits and historical panoramas featuring Irish-American military heroes of the American Civil War-men such as Colonel Michael Corcoran, a hero of the Battle of Bull Run, and Thomas Francis Meagher, who helped to form an Irish Brigade and rose to the rank of general. Later in the century there were scenes of city life in the New World and portraits of sporting heroes from the boxing world such as the great John L. Sullivan, Paddy Ryan, and John C. Heenan. There was the feisty archbishop of New York, John Hughes (known as Dagger John), who officiated at old Saint Patrick's Cathedral and dreamed of building a new cathedral-the one we know today-which itself was pictured in a popular print. There are, as well, more lighthearted episodes in American city life such as an amusing print poking fun at the great impresario P. T. Barnum, and a pair of humorous images of the newly popular sport of long distance race-walking. In all, the selection offers a mini-history of important landmarks in the Irish past along with a proud reckoning of some significant moments and key figures in American history.
