Commonly portrayed in Civil War literature as a bungling general who disgraced himself at Fort Donelson, Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-78) is one of the most controversial military figures of 19th Century America. He was one of Tennessee's wealthiest planters and lawyers; his friendship with James K. Polk led him to a generalship in the Mexican War. Years later, when Civil War broke out, Pillow organized the Army of Tennessee. This book is a wonderful biography of Gideon Pillow, telling of his many abilities and triumphs as well as his many mistakes that led to much heartache. Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ is in a plastic sleeve.
