Illustrated with photos. Autobiography of saxiphonist and one of the swing era's most popular band leaders, Charlie Barnet (1913-1991). Barnet had his first professional gig while still a high school student in New York City, sneaking away after role all to play three sessions a day in a manhattan Chinese restaurant. Within a few years he was leading his own band at the Paramount and the Cocoanut Grove in New York.He relocated to Hollywood in 1931, headlining at the Palomar and Casa Manana in L.A. Some of his biggest hots included "Cherokee", "Pompton Turnpike", and "Skyliner". With a blind eye to racial prejudice, Barnet was able to draw on the sounds of many Black musicians such as Garnet Clark, Trummy Young, Clark Terry, Roy Eldridge and vocalists Bunny Briggs and Lena Horne.
