In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. XIII; 226 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Overall good and clean. - Insgesamt gut und sauber. - Refinement, sophistication, or urbanity whatever we choose to call it is that almost intangible something that results from living in an atmosphere of culture, usually an urban center. In ancient Rome the term applied to this quality was urbanitas, and it was this that the Roman and early medieval scholar-gentleman sought to acquire. Since then, the urbane, in contrast to the rustic and provincial, has been the epitome of sophistication and refinement. Nowadays the feeling is very much alive, in spite of the tendency to reject such feelings of conformity. This examination of urbanitas begins with the Greek background of the fifth and fourth centuries b.c. as well as the later Hellenistic period and ends with Pliny the Younger, roughly the end of the classical era in Rome. Included are the beginnings of sophistication in Rome, the experimentation of the Scip- ionic Circle, the attempts at analysis and precise definition in the Ciceronian period, the outlook of the Roman gentleman in the Augustan Age, and the changes in feeling that are represented by Pliny and the other writers of the first century after Christ. The book is a chronological survey and analysis of what the Roman writers say about their refinement. Where possible, an attempt is made to trace developments in outlook and attitudes. After surveying the entire corpus of classical evidence and modern work related to the subject, the author arrives at sane and penetrating conclusions that will appeal not only to scholars but to everyone with an interest in the history of ideas. Edwin S. Ramage is Professor of Classical Studies and Chairman of the Department in Indiana University at Bloomington. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of British Columbia and the Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. He is the author of many articles on classical subjects published in scholarly journals. ISBN 9780806110639 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 563 Original cloth with dustjacket.
