Frederick Turner is the author of seven books of nonfiction and three novels. The recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation…. As the entire world struggled to put its affairs back in order in the aftermath global conflict, few events in the U.S. were so eagerly awaited as baseball's spring training. Drawing on interviews with many of the players who wrote the season's history, Turner offers readers the story of baseball's return after World War II. The 1946 season saw the returning war veterans regain their stardom; a raid on major-league rosters by five rich brothers from Mexico; the beginnings of a players' union; and the entrance of black players. Derived from a Kirkus review: A fresh perspective on the season when premier players such as Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, and Bob Feller returned from WW II. In all, 500 major leaguers had served in the armed forces; Turner focuses on players from the pennant-winning Red Sox and Cardinals but also examines the return of DiMaggio, who'd been gone since 1942, and Feller, who had missed almost four full seasons. As Turner follows the pennant races, he takes a look at the blossoming of rookies. In recounting the final days of the pennant races and the World Series, the author pays particular attention to the contributions made by the returning veterans and the impact they made on their teams' fortunes.
