John Wilson Lewis (November 16, 1930 September 4, 2017) was an American political scientist. He taught at Cornell University, before joining the faculty of Stanford University, where he became the William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics. Lewis received a master's degree in 1958, and completed a Ph.D. in 1962. He specialized in ChinaUnited States relations and the Korean conflict. He began teaching at Cornell in 1961, and left for Stanford in 1968. At Stanford, Lewis became founding director of the Center for East Asian Studies, serving until 1970 when he started the Center for International Security and Arms Control, which later became the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) in 1983. From 1983 to 1990, Lewis led what became the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. Lewis shared his experience of arriving at Stanford University as a specialist on the sensitive topic of China during a time of significant public unrest related to the Vietnam War. Lewis also recounted being invited to Stanford and his role in founding the Center for East Asian Studies. Lewis and Xue Litai's 1988 text China Builds the Bomb is a seminal text on the development of China's nuclear weapons program. Xue Litai is a research scholar at the Project on Peace and Cooperation in the Asian-Pacific Region at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation. His research focuses on global and regional factors that could cause armed conflicts across the Taiwan Strait and the impact produced by the crisis upon the security and stability of the Northeast-Pacific region. The authors examine why China is investing heavily in developing nuclear weapons and intercontinental missile systems. Among the explanations cited are: traditional Chinese military strategy, current perceptions of foreign threats, the historical legacy of humiliation at the hands of foreign powers, and the overpowering will of Mao Zedong. They describe how the first nuclear device was set off in 1964, and how during the following 25 years the Chinese have developed a complete triad of delivery systems--air-based, sea-based and land-based--for their nuclear force.
