Introduction to this edition by Rpger Spiller. 270 pages. The author was a junior officer in the Japanese campaign against Port Arthur [Russia's ice-free port in China]. His account is an interesting introduction to the concept of yamato-damashi [or traditional Japanese spirit] which drove the Japanese soldiers as if they were the Emperor's "human bullets" and like bullets they were unconcerned with victory, comfort or self-preservation.
