Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. A fine, fresh, unread as-new copy in equally fine dust jacket. First printing. Hardcover. xii+ 213 pp. with bibliography. Illustrations. Biography of Hannah Freeman (1701-1802) a native of the Lenape Native American tribe of what would become eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She was born in a log cabin on Brandywine Creek and moved as a young girl to nearby Shamokin, her father wishing to distance himself from the growing colonial white settler population. Hannah earned a living producing typical native goods such as blankets, brooms, baskets, and by working for nearby Quaker farmers. She became known as a healer, using her knowledge of the indigenous medicinal plants. She may have been a common law wife to a white settler named Andrew Freeman thus adopting the name but was colloquially known during her lifetime as "Indian Hannah". In 1764 she and her extended family relocated to Woodbury, New Jersey to escape the depredations of a group of white known as the Paxton Boys who attacked a settlement of Natives in December, 1763; the family would eventually return to their ancestral lands near the Brandywine. At the time of her death in 1802 at age 101, she was indigent and was buried in a Potters Field and was though to be the last surviving Lenape in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
