If anything, humanity will have exhausted the heroic mythemes on - rich so much has been staked. Humanity (a term which acquired the prestige of its contemporary usage at the Nuremberg trials) will certainly rave to rethink the projects and projections that have, despite everything, traced out a history of indecency - a history which compromises the very possibility of a thinking of futurity. In its fading moments, even as the signals change, the last century will have been dominated in the end by a diction of deficit: deficiency, whether immuno or projected outwardly and marked by complementary economies, no longer carries the bounce of lack or the sure fire of nihilism but says, more simply, that we have been depleted. This depletion has to do with a relation to the outside - a national deficit, for example - but it also controls a low-energy intensity that involves everyone. It seems as though all accounts of savings and saviors are understood to be depleted. Exhausted with the failure of models, identities, leaders, promise, so-called breakthroughs, vampirized by figures of exigence or ecstasy, the last century sees itself as standing out, if only in the sense that there is an outstanding debt to be paid - but to whom? to what?
